The college of chemistry and chemical engineering at Chongqing University has originated from the Department of Chemistry at Chongqing University (1929) founded in 1932 and the Department of Chemical Engineering founded in 1936. After 90 years of development, The college has evloved as a research institute in the disciplines of both “Chemical Enginering” and “Chemistry”. In 2019, the two disciplines were ranked at 76-100, and 151-200 at “ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects”. The discipline of “Chemical Enginering” was ranked as “B+” in the fourth round of discipline assessment employed by the Ministry of Education, while the discipline of “Chemistry” is ranked at 0.29% in the ESI ranking of global chemical research institutions.

The college has four academic departments: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Applied Chemistry. The college has Ph.D and Master programs in both “Chemical Engineering” and “Chemistry”, Postdoctoral research station in Chemical Engineering, and Doctor of Engineering programs in “Energy and Power” and “Environmental protection and safety”.

There are total 126 faculties and staffs, among them, 45 are full professors, 91 have received their Ph.D degree, 1 was rewarded as the Chair Professor of the Yangtze River Scholar Program, 6 are Distinguished Young Scholars supported by National Natural Science Funds or Central Organization Department, 16 are provincial and ministerial level Distinguished Scholars.

The total lab area for research and experiment of the college is about 12000 m2, including the key research platforms of “National-Municipal Joint Engineering Laboratory of Chemical Process Intensification and Reaction”, “Chongqing Key Laboratory of Chemical Process for Clean Energy and Resource Utilization”, “Chongqing Key Laboratory of Theoretical and computational Chemistry”, etc. The state of the art facilities including XRD, TEM, SEM, IR, Raman, NMR, are available. The research activities in the college have been supported by various national fund, such as National Key Research and Development Project, Natural Science Foundation, International Technology Cooperation Key Project, Chongqing Key Technology Project, etc. More than 200 papers at the international or national well-recognized journals including Nat. Catal., Nat. Chem., Nat. Commu., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., AIChE J., can be anuually published by the faculty memebers.

The college has the “Chongqing Demonstration Center for College Fundamental Chemistry Experimental Teaching” and “Chongqing Teaching Team for College Chemistry”. The course of “College Chemistry” was granted as “National Excellent Course” in 2009; the course of “Physical Chemistry” was granted as “Chongqing Excellent Course” in 2010. Moreover, the courses of “Principles of Chemical Engineering ”, “Fundamental Chemistry” , “Instrumental Analysis” and “Electrochemical Engineering” are Excellent Courses of Chongqing University.
